SHINJI NISHIKAWA (西川伸司)
Illustrator and manga artist Shinji Nishikawa has worked as the lead creature designer on many of Toho’s giant monster films. Beginning with Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989), Nishikawa was responsible for designing the featured monsters throughout the Heisei Godzilla film series, which concluded with Godzilla vs. Destroyah in 1995. Following design work on Mothra 3 (1998), Nishikawa went on to design the Millennium Godzilla and related creature concept work for Godzilla 2000 (1999), Godzilla x Megaguirus (2000), Godzilla x MechaGodzilla (2001) and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS (2002), finally culminating with Godzilla Final Wars which was the last Godzilla film produced by Toho in Japan to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
Nishikawa is also the original creator of the YAT Anshin! Uchu Ryokou anime series, and handled design work on the Choseishin Gransazer television series, among other credits. 2016 saw the publication of his 230-page deluxe art book, Shinji Nishikawa: Godzilla Illustrated Collection. His latest project has been kaiju and character design for the 2018 anime SSSS.Gridman, produced by Studio Trigger and Tsuburaya Productions.
